Benson’s Secret Negotiations with Former Democrat Party Chair Mark Brewer and Exclusion of Republicans Show that Benson is Incapable of Being Impartial and Looking to Rig Districts in Democrats’ Favor
Livonia—Michigan Republican Party Chair Candidate Laura Cox called on Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson to recuse herself from the redistricting case, League of Women Voters v. Benson. Cox called on Benson to recuse herself after it became public that Benson was secretly negotiating with former Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer who donated to Benson’s 2018 Secretary of State campaign and is a close ally of Benson’s. Benson and Brewer are negotiating to change the boundaries of districts for the upcoming 2020 election without involving Republican legislators and Congresspeople who have intervened in the case.
“Jocelyn Benson needs to recuse herself as it is clear she is conflicted by her collusion to secretly negotiate a settlement with her former Democratic Party chair and campaign donor, Mark Brewer. Benson and Brewer are conspiring to rig districts in Democrats’ favor and there is no excuse for her exclusion of Republicans except to draw districts that favor Democrats,” said Laura Cox. “Benson has always been ultrapartisan, she is clearly conflicted and needs to recuse herself immediately.”
